
Retail CBDC has recently become a hot academic issue. The study finds that the main goal of the central bank to study retail CBDC is to promote financial inclusion and maintain the importance of the central bank in the monetary system. In addition, how to protect the privacy of user identity information and transaction data and meet the financial integrity standards is an important challenge for the central bank.
A survey of 66 central banks in the world by the bank for International Settlements shows that 15% of central banks are studying wholesale CBDC, and 32% of central banks are studying retail CBDC.
The use of wholesale CBDC is limited between the central bank and financial institutions and is not open to the public. Retail CBDC is also known as the general target type, and its use is oriented to the public. From the perspective of CBDC projects of major central banks, some are retail oriented, such as DC / EP of the people’s Bank of China. Some start with approval, such as jasper project of Bank of Canada, Ubin project of monetary authority of Singapore, Stella project of Bank of Japan and European Central Bank. A survey of 66 central banks (corresponding to 75% of the world’s population and 90% of the economic output) by the bank for International Settlements (BIS) found that 15% of the central banks are studying wholesale CBDC, 32% of the central banks are studying retail CBDC, and nearly half of the central banks are studying both wholesale and retail cbdcs.
